‘my shadow and my self’ at the Late Music Concert Series

A new song for baritone and piano, my shadow and my self, will be performed by Robert Rice and William Vann on Saturday 6th April in the second Late Music Concert in York. The piece appears in the first half of the programme, which features six settings of poetry by Ursula Vaughan Williams, including three from the University of York Music Press’s collection, Finding, and two further new settings by Thomas Simaku and fellow PhD student Ji Sun Yang. The second half features new additions to the ongoing Northern Songbook collaboration project between local poets and composers.

my shadow and my self is subtitled a ‘scene for baritone and piano’ for reasons which will become clear in performance. The title is taken from the last four words of the second part of ‘Winter’ from the 1948 collection Need for Speech; the piece sets the third part.

The concert takes place in York Unitarian Chapel with a pre-concert talk by Nicola LeFanu at 6.45pm before the 7.30pm start. More information on the concert and on the Late Music Concert Series can be found here:
